#N Urodele, Cynops pyrrhogaster, laryngotrachea, lung,
 neuroepithelial endocrine cell, immunocytochemistry
#T In the present study, many bioactive substances (serotonin: 5-HT,
somatostatin: SOM, calcitonin: CT, calcitonin gene-related peptide: CGRP,
bombesin: BOM, substance P: SP, neuropeptide Y: NPY, vasoactive intestinal
peptide: VIP) were immunocytochemically demonstrated in serial sections of
the entire respiratory tract (laryngotrachea, lungs) of Cynops
pyrrhogaster.
5-HT immunoreactive solitary neuroepithelial endocrine (NEE) cells were
observed in variable numbers in all parts of the laryngotrachea and in
areas of the lungs covered with ciliomucous epithelium. Solitary NEE cells
were seen in the laryngotrachea and lungs of C. pyrrhogaster, after
immunocytochemical staining for SOM, CT, CGRP, BOM, SP, NPY and VIP, but
the number, localization and appearance of the labeled NEE cells differed
considerably.
It may be concluded that at least eight bioactive substances can be found
in different subpopulations of NEE cells. The necessity is emphasized of
reliable methods for adequate sampling of all regions of the respiratory
tract in comparative histological studies of the NEE system.
